Invoking the notwithstanding clause to overturn a court decision to protect our freedom of expression is outrageous.
Families of long-term care residents, parents of children with autism, teachers and school communities, working people, environmental advocates, and frontline health care workers have the right to free speech. This is Doug Ford’s desperate attempt to slience them.

On June 8, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice struck down major parts of Doug Ford’s changes to the Election Finances Act – saying his attempt to stop independent groups and people from expressing their views through ads is unconstitutional, violating Canadians’ Charter right to freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression.
On June 9, the Ford government announced it will take the unprecedented step of using a constitutional override clause (also called Section 33 or the Notwithstanding clause) to allow them to override the court’s decision, and the constitutional rights of Ontarians.
