TORONTO -- Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Finance Jessica Bell (University--Rosedale) sounds alarm on tens of thousands of lost jobs in Ontario’s key industries and calls on the Ford government for stronger measures to create and protect good, stable jobs. The following is her statement:
“Ontarians are facing massive uncertainty from rising costs and Trump’s tariff chaos,” said Bell.
“Meanwhile, we are losing tens of thousands of jobs in key sectors, and it is taking longer and longer for people to find work. Despite growing economic uncertainty and ongoing job losses, we still don’t have a plan from the Premier to protect workers and create good jobs.
“According to Statistics Canada, Ontario lost 2,800 jobs just this past month. With an aggressive trade war on the horizon promising more economic uncertainty, things will get worse if we don’t act now. To strengthen Ontario, we need to put our workers and industry first.
“It’s time to bring in strong buy local policies to encourage Ontario to support our local economy, and direct government investment in public infrastructure and services to Ontario and Canadian companies."
The latest Statistics Canada report shows that year over year, Ontario lost 21,300 jobs in manufacturing, 12,000 jobs in Agriculture, and 29,900 jobs in business, building and other support services.
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
